Our journey towards continual improvement shall be traced back in 1995 when our Sesa Goa Iron Ore Business Quality Management System (QMS) was certified to ISO-9002:1994 by Bureau Veritas Quality International (BVQI) - India, which was further re-certified in October 1998. In January 2002, Quality Management System was certified to new standard ISO-9001:2000 and further underwent re-certification in December 2004. For Sesa Resources Limited and Sesa Mining Corporation Limited QMS was certified to ISO 9002:1994 on the 30th April 2000 by Det Norske Veritas AS (DNV). It was re-certified to ISO 9001:2000 in the years 2003, 2006, 2009 and was further re-certified to ISO 9001:2008 in the year 29th February 2012.
Vedanta Ltd – Sesa Goa Iron Ore Business is known not only for its exemplary achievements in production and productivity, but also for its progressive and innovative methods in environment protection and safety performance improvement.
A formal Environment Management System (EMS) was developed and certified to ISO-14001:1996 standard by Aspect Moody Certification, U.K in January 1997, which continued till January 2006 with re-certification in the year 2000 & 2003. In the year 2006, Sesa Goa Limited – Iron Ore Division (Goa & Karnataka) integrated both Quality Management System and Environmental Management System. This Integrated Management System was audited and certified to ISO 9001:2000 / ISO 14001:2004 by Bureau Veritas Certification (India) Private Limited on 20th May 2006. For SRL and SMCL EMS was certified to ISO 14001:1996 on 19th May 2001 by DNV. It was re-certified in the years 2004 and 2007 and was further re-certified to ISO 14001:2004 in the year 2010 and 22nd April 2013.
Vedanta Limited – Sesa Goa Iron Ore Business also developed Occupational Health & Safety Management System (OHSMS), which was certified to OHSAS 18001:1999 standard by BVQI, India on 5th April 2002. Sesa was the first Iron ore mining company in India to have ISO-9001 certification for its Quality Management System, ISO-14001 certification for its Environment Management System and OHSAS-18001 for its Occupational Health & Safety Management System. Further, all the three Management Systems (i.e. QMS, EMS & OHSMS) were integrated together and were re-certified to ISO 9001:2008, ISO 14001:2004 and OHSAS 18001:2007 on 19th May 2012 by Certification Body Bureau Veritas Certification (India) Private Limited [BV]. For SRL and SMCL, OHSMS was certified to OHSAS 18001:2007 on 29th January 2012. All three Management System Standards (i.e. QMS, EMS & OHSMS) were integrated in the year 2012 and certified by Certification Body DNV.
With the change of name from Sesa Sterlite Limited to Vedanta Limited in April 2015, the Company was re-certified to its Integrated Management System (i.e. ISO 9001:2008, ISO 14001:2004(E) & OHSAS 18001:2007) for Sesa Goa Iron Ore Business by new Certification Body Indian Register Quality Systems (IRQS) in the year 18th May 2015 merging the Shipbuilding activities of barge construction and maintenance into the Mining Division as a supporting activity to the Mining Operations. The subsidiaries Sesa Resources Limited and Sesa Mining Corporation Limited were also re-certified to its Integrated Management System (i.e. ISO 9001:2008, ISO 14001:2004(E) & OHSAS 18001:2007) by new Certification Body Indian Register Quality Systems (IRQS) in the year 13th August 2015. All the 03 Companies viz. VL, SRL & SMCL though granted with separate ISO Certificates (as they are different registered Companies) are certified under one IMS documentation to bring in standardization of processes across Iron Ore Business.
However, due to the Mining Ban imposed in the State of Goa by the State Government and the Honourable Supreme Court during the period from 10th September 2012 and 5th October 2012 respectively till 15th January 2015 and 21st April 2014 respectively, the scope of certification had to undergo change limited to ‘provision of infrastructure’ only in case of SRL & SMCL ISO certificates due to no mining activities and no exports/sale of iron ore. The said ISO Certificates will undergo change to full scope of activities after verification during the next six monthly Surveillance audit by Apr/May’16.
Sesa Sterlite Limited – Sesa Goa Iron Ore has also developed Social Accountability Management System, which was certified to SA 8000:2008 Standard by BV Certification, India on 23rd November 2011 and further maintains valid re-certification every 03 years with name change to Vedanta limited in April 2015. Sesa Sterlite Limited (SSL) - Sesa Goa Iron Ore was also certified to ISO 27001:2005 for the Information Security Management System (ISMS) by BSI Certification, UK on 12th April 2012 for Corporate Head Office IT Functions. It has further undergone re-certification to ISMS with name change to Vedanta Limited in the year April 2015 and maintains valid re-certification every 03 years.
Sesa Goa Iron Ore Business possesses an Environment Laboratory at Codli Location which is approved by the Ministry of Environment & Forests (MOEF) of India and a Chemical Laboratory at Bicholim Location approved by National Accreditation Board for testing and calibration Laboratories (NABL) of India for ISO/IEC 17025:2005.
